Covestro has expanded its Specialty Films Technical Competence Center (TCC) in Shanghai, further strengthening its ability to support customers across Asia Pacific in applications ranging from smart automotive surfaces to humanoid robots and secure identification documents. “Our customers are under pressure to innovate faster in today’s dynamic markets, and product cycles are getting shorter,” said Dr. Caroline Wolff, Head of Specialty Films for Asia Pacific at Covestro. “The expanded Shanghai TCC allows us to move beyond supplying materials and become a true development partner. By strengthening our prototyping and simulation capabilities locally, we can serve customers across Asia Pacific with greater agility, accelerate development timelines, and advance exciting next-generation applications such as smart automotive surfaces and humanoid robots.” Upgraded equipment with enhanced capabilities The TCC has upgraded its Film Insert Molding (FIM) capabilities, a technology that enables one-step fabrication of plastic components with a decorated or functional surface. This creates smart surfaces such as automotive exteriors and interiorswithbuilt-in functionalities like lighting, heating and controls. The new equipment includes a larger screen printer that can handlepolycarbonate films nearly twice the previous size. This allows the team to prototype largercomponents, such asautomotive front grilles, where sensors and display elements can be directly integrated into the exterior surfaces. The upgraded facility now provides integrated FIM support, from selecting suitable resins and films to screen printing, forming, trimming and final molding. Flexible tooling systems help reduce prototyping costs and shorten development cycles. Design feasibility simulation enables early validation of concepts before full production. Flexible Printed Electronics for robots The expansion also includes specialized equipment for Flexible Printed Electronics (FPE), which are electronic circuits printed on flexible substrates like TPU films that can be used in wearable devices and robots. A dedicated screen printer designed for conductive inks ensures precise control during circuit printing, while a new thermal forming machine allows the team to test how circuits perform when shaped into complex 3D forms. Maintaining electrical performance during forming remains a key challenge in flexible electronics. This supports emerging applications such as tactile sensors in dexterous hands and electronic skin for humanoid robots. The TCC also advises customers on processing conditions and circuit design. The Specialty Films TCC is part of Covestro’s Asia-Pacific Innovation Center, which brings together R&D capabilities from multiple business units and the central group innovation function, with shared technical and digital infrastructure. “Expanding the Specialty Films facilityshows our commitment to building world-class innovation capabilities closer to customers in Asia Pacific,” said Dr. Guo Ruijing, Head of Group Innovation and Sustainability Asia Pacific, and Head of the Asia-Pacific Innovation Center, Covestro. “It will also foster closer collaboration across our businesses and functions within the Innovation Center.”
Clariant is presenting its innovative agricultural solutions at the China International Agrochemical & Crop Protection Exhibition (CAC 2026), taking place from March 17-19, 2026 at Hall 7.2, 72F09, National Exhibition and Convention Center Shanghai. Under the slogan "Greater chemistry, better harvests," Clariant showcases advanced formulation technologies, including two new product launches designed to help customers overcome critical challenges in modern agriculture. Dispersogen PSL 100: Enabling robust formulations for complex and high-load systems To meet today's agricultural challenges, crop protection formulations are becoming increasingly complex. Formulators face growing difficulties achieving stable formulations when incorporating multiple actives, high electrolyte components, and biological actives. Clariant's newly launched high-performance polymeric dispersant Dispersogen PSL 100 addresses these challenges with superior stabilization of complex high-load multi-active combinations, reliable crystal growth control to preserve particle size during storage, and excellent tolerance toward electrolytes and hard water for dependable performance in salt-rich environments. With 100% active content, Dispersogen PSL 100 allows efficient use at low dosage levels while maximizing formulation space. Its non-hazardous profile and proven compatibility with microorganisms and seed germination further allows its use in biological and seed treatment applications. “Dispersogen PSL 100 gives formulators greater flexibility when working with challenging active ingredients and complex combination products,” said Toshiaki Shinohara, Clariant's Head of Crop Solutions APAC. “By combining crystal growth control, electrolyte tolerance, and biocompatibility in one solution, it helps customers develop more robust and future-ready crop protection formulations.” Tonnegel 50: Achieving consistent rheology and coating performance across diverse conditions Maintaining stable viscosity and uniform coating quality across varying pH, temperature, and salt conditions remains a persistent challenge in pesticide formulations, seed coatings, and suspension fertilizers. The new Tonnegel 50, part of the attapulgite business Clariant acquired from BASF in October 2022, provides robust thixotropic properties with no post-thickening issues, ensuring consistent performance in demanding environments. Its ultra-fine grades with extremely low residue enable superior seed coating adhesion and abrasion resistance, while its EPA-registered formulations support higher nutrient loading in suspension fertilizers, reducing transportation costs and improving operational efficiency. “Tonnegel 50 delivers the consistency and reliability that formulators need across diverse applications – from pesticide suspensions to seed coatings and fertilizers,” said Ying Xu, Head of Marketing, Adsorbents APAC. “By maintaining stable rheology under challenging conditions and enabling higher loading capacities, it helps our customers reduce costs, improve product quality, and enhance operational efficiency throughout their production and application processes.”
